I was a bit intimidated entering into this play with not much historical context, but I found that I really connected with it. I love the complexities of Richard and his emotional turmoil, warring with his own identity. The play reaches across time and speaks to those even now who question what it is that makes us who we are. Is it what people say we are, or is there something deeper?

I have to admit, I have been avoiding reading any of Shakespeare's War of the Roses plays. Mainly because I was worried about being bored. I should not have worried, this play is engaging and emotional. I do think that it helped that I listened to a dramatized version while reading the play. The dramatized play allowed me to hear and feel the intent of the words in the play and I definitely enjoyed it.
