This was very well done. The inner struggle the main character faces as she refuses to accept her daughter's queer identity, trying desperately to get her to adhere to societies expectations all while facing her own mortality and future made for a very emotional read.

The author has done a great job of laying the main characters trains of thought out on the page and having us understand this woman's battle with her own emotions.

A really enjoyable, short read for anyone looking for a good queer novella!

This book became increasingly intolerable for me. I am generally squeamish about medical issues and excrement, which became an increasingly large part. It also seemed rather pathetic to hear a mother complaining all the time that he daughter had an extremely kind girlfriend who was treating her well. I hope that the book shows growth after this point, but I reached a point I couldn’t take it anymore.

Whilst not an easy read (especially as a bi woman) because the story is told through the pov of a homophobic mother, I'm glad I read this book. This short novel has a certain ambition, trying to examine several aspects of society. Homophobia, heteronormativity, ageism, poverty/low-paid job, loneliness, generational trauma (particularly passed on from mother to daughter), traditionalist society, the treatment of patients in a retirement home, ...

Maybe not perfect, this book still is quite significant, an important read. This story may feel like it's been done before but to me, growing up in a rural environment with homophobic family members, this is sadly a little too relatable (even down to the care assitant job).
