Ruthless — kejam, mungkin istilah itu tepat menggambarkan karya Asturias yang memenangkan Nobel Sastra tahun 1967 ini. Tanpa membuang waktu, karya dimulai dengan kekacauan rakyat jelata di tempat paling ironis — katedral. Tempat itu menjadi pusat harapan masyarakat negara fiksi dalam cerita ini, di mana mereka tak mampu lagi berharap kepada rezim dan Yang Mulia Tuan Presiden untuk memberi mereka kehidupan. Hanya Tuhan harapan mereka satu-satunya.

Mengapa kematian konyol seorang kolonel menjadi sebuah skandal nasional? Mengapa Hakim Militer tidak percaya seorang pengemis tolol bisa membunuhnya? Kebusukan rezim negara fiksi Amerika Latin ini terkuak setelah ambisi Tuan Presiden diceritakan, salah satunya adalah ambisinya menjebak musuh politiknya, seorang jenderal bernama Eusebio Canales. Dikirimkan sendiri oleh Tuan Presiden sosok tangan kanannya — Miguel Muka Malaikat, untuk ‘membebaskan’ Jenderal Canales dari kejaran Presiden, tapi apakah perjalanan itu memang yang terbaik untuk Sang Jenderal?

Dalam tugasnya, Muka Malaikat melibatkan banyak tokoh ikut serta. Namun, rencana dan posisinya runtuh seketika ketika dia bertemu dengan sosok ‘malaikat’ bernama Camila Canales — anak perempuan dari Jenderal Canales sendiri. Naluri liarnya ingin memperkosa gadis tak berdosa itu, tapi justru rasa cinta tumbuh, menyebabkan posisinya sebagai tangan kanan Tuan Presiden terancam. Saat ia nekat menikahi Camila, Miguel Muka Malaikat tidak menyadari nasib buruk yang menimpanya dan kekasih yang ia cintai.

Realisme magis terasa jelas dalam karya penulis Guetamala ini, yaitu ketika Jenderal Canales bertemu dengan masyarakat Indian yang memiliki kemampuan ‘klenik’ lewat dukun-dukun mereka. Namun dengan ceritanya berjalan menuju akhir, disadari bahwa kekuatan yang tercetak dalam judul novel ini jauh lebih bengis dari kekuatan sihir apapun — termasuk cinta.

Arcane language and tone made this super tough to get through. It felt like a strong satire of machismo government in Latin America for sure, but it was bleak and cold. I found it hard to follow individual characters, and the narration was exceedingly muddy. But maybe that’s the point. The machine of corruption and bureaucracy grinds up everyone into nothingness in service of the strongman. I think this book would be much better if read for a class/in a setting to fully dissect it. But it reads like it was written in 1924. Which it was.

This is a dense, surreal, and bleak look at life under a Latin American dictatorship. Despite being only 300 pages, the plot is surprisingly complex with a number of different characters being routinely rotated as the focus any given chapter. This complexity works pretty well overall, though, and the story as a whole is very well told and has some pretty striking emotional moments. My only critique is that at times Asturias' surreal and dreamlike sequences can be a bit tedious to read, but this a relatively minor complaint. Overall a pretty good read.

About life in a poverty-stricken, corrupt police state early in this century, though it could have been centuries ago, given the conditions and the actors described. Reads as if Faulkner were writing Le Carre, some of the Modernist turns are outdated, but remains a very powerful story.

Historia difícil de leer en el idioma original, complejo y con un lenguaje que no se entiende fácilmente por aquellos que no están familiarizados con el español de Guatemala. Sigue siendo una buena novela.

Storia difficile da leggere in lingua originale, complessa e con un linguaggio non facilmente comprensibile per coloro che non conoscono bene lo spagnolo dell'America Latina. Resta comunque un bel romanzo.

Claramente un libro que se sabe que es estupendo, pero no me esperaba lo entretenido que es también. M. Á. Asturias usó a la perfección cantidad de metáforas y supo hilvanar una historia que nace de una semilla tan pequeña pero explosiva. Fue fascinante también leer una novela tan prestigiosa en lenguaje guatemalteco, cosa que no se suele ver, desafortunadamente. Muy recomendado.
