The Black Cat is one of Poe's best short stories and while I wouldn't say it is extremely scary, I would say it is extremely disturbing. I get a kick out of this story because my wife has an intense hatred of cats and thinking of her being stalked by a cat is a funny image. One could say the cat is the villain of this tale but it really is the man whose brutality and insanity come off the pages clearly. This is probably my 3rd favorite Poe story behind The Telltale Heart and The Cask of Amontillado.

I feel like I need more than this. The concept was intriguing - I love stories that explore the deterioration of the human soul - but I could've enjoyed it more if it was 50 pages or so.

So far Poe's horror tales seem to be about stupid, obsessive, contemptible men doing stupid, obsessive, contemptible deeds. As well written as I would expect!

the prose and the ending are brilliant, the story itself is very meh.
