what was that romanceeeeeee girlll its a choiceeeee /neg

this books pacing is insane - I couldn't put it down bcs shit was happening on every page in every scene and it was almost too intense like girl let me breathe
the writings really gooood
I had to get used to the dark themes of the book and the constant violence - I even had a nightmare after the first day of reading this and I woke up scared of the dark mskdfjdms
I'm interested in reading the second book for sure but I am slightly worried that I'll be less into it bcs I did NOT care for Jaxon Hall - he's a really annoying character and I just don't care if he lives or dies and it seems like in the second book he might appear alot moreeeee so yikes to thattt

hmmm, where to start? First of all I enjoyed the concept of the world and the ‘magic’ system, however, it is introduced way too dry and theoretically. I would have liked to see many more examples of actual clairvoyants in action instead of just name-dropping types and never getting to see how their powers actually work… also, this whole time I was worried
about Emim being a massive problem but they hardly mattered in the end
.

The main character makes crazy decisions, her survival instincts are all over the place. Are you telling me she has a gift that allows her to sense other dreamscapes and she STILL gets ambushed and surprised a billion times? Everyone thinks she is a prodigy and special but she needs to be saved all the time. Her
BEST FRIEND dies and 10 minutes later she is worrying about potentially being out of a job

I get that this is supposed to be a book in a series and therefore some foreshadowing needs to be done in advance but I don’t think I care enough to continue this series. There were very few characters that I cared about and I found the main character especially annoying.

Overall I liked the writing and I think that it’s impressive that the author was so young when she wrote it. For the most part I enjoyed reading the book and, though I found it predictable, I was curious throughout. The last part was really tedious though. I got this book as a gift and therefore I will treasure it. However, for me it was just too long for the story it was trying to tell and it didn’t manage to hook me. The prequel ‘the Pale Dreamer’ gave me some hope for insights in Paige’s character but these were quickly squashed, though I really liked the ‘side quest’ and more insights into the syndicate business (I still don’t get the value of buying a bound spirit however?).

I wanted to read this book because I enjoyed the Priory of the Orange Tree and wanted to read more of Samantha’s work, with these series being released with an author preferred text, I decided to jump right in. I enjoyed this book, and it was a perfect start to the series, I just wanted more again.

The year is 2059. For two centuries, the Republic of Scion has led an oppressive campaign against unnaturalness in Europe. In London, Paige Mahoney holds a high rank in the criminal underworld. The right hand of the ruthless White Binder, Paige is a dreamwalker, a rare and formidable kind of clairvoyant. Under Scion law, she commits treason simply by breathing. When Paige is arrested for murder, she meets the mysterious founders of Scion, who have designs on her uncommon abilities. If she is to survive and escape, Paige must use every skill at her disposal and put her trust in someone who ought to be her enemy.

I usually struggle with fantasy books due to the world building and the characters and the terminology. But like The Priory of the Orange Tree, I didn’t struggle with this book. It was like slowly sinking into a marshmallow and I loved it. I’ve started to love how big these books are and how the author structure these books. I love the slow burn that happens in this book and how you can see that the characters aren’t trying to trust each other but they need to trust each other to survive. I loved the love story brewing and how Paige went from being this scared and timid young girl to a kick ass woman who stood her ground and is leading the rebellion.

Just like The Priory of the Orange Tree, the only thing that stopped this being a five-star read for me was every big reveal and big twist was sort of anti-climax, I was just waiting for the reaction to be Holy Mother of Mary and it just didn’t happen, it was just sort of crept in and then we moved on. Plus, I would have loved for this to be dual POV or even multiple POV with Warden and Jaxon having their own chapters, especially towards the start of the rebellion.

Overall, this is a kick ass debut and a pretty good first book in this series that I will be carrying on with.

why in the WORLD WAS THIS PITCHED WRONG. the blurb was literally the first 3 chapters and then it pivoted so hard and i hated it. the plot was just icky and about halfway i noticed the urgent need for an editor because things just didn't make sense. the plot climax was not good and i hate the 'romance' please no. i definitely won't be continuing with the series.
