The characters were great, the world building was immersive, and i enjoyed the slow burn relationship development. So, all in all, I loved everything everything except for the mystery side of things - to be honest i don't like murder mystery/detective as a genre at all, but i was willing to put up with it for this book. If I didn't have a general dislike of mystery then this book would've been a solid 4.5 stars :)

The book started off with a lot of promise for character exploration and workd-building in terms of the politics but it stagnated after the 1/3rd mark on both fronts. The political plot & romance plot didn't work well together though it could have. I would have easily given this book a 3.5 if the exact series of events took place over a much, much longer time period.
Spoilers: all of the events from the meeting between the protagonists take place in 7 days. That's too short.

I tend to avoid books with any rape in them, it is usually a cheap trope thrown in to traumatize a character or show someone's evil, and is rarely handled properly in fantasy. This book surprised me, in how nuanced it was about Velasin's feelings and his recovery. His guilt, his grief, everything around it. Yes, this is very much a hurt/comfort romance, but it is also very much a story of healing and building trust. Throw in some court mystery and gay pining: Voila! I enjoyed the novelty of new terms like metem, tiern etc., and hope to read more books in this universe.

Cute queer fantasy book featuring gay princes and trans folks. All the content warnings for the beginning part.

This book was complex, heart breaking, hard to read at times, but incredibly warming and moving.
