I am a fan of V.E. Schwab and have been since I read A Darker Shade of Magic back in highschool, but this book didn't leave as much of an impression. This could be because I was using an audiobook, which is not normal for me. However the characters fell a bit flat for me and the plot was a bit too slow for what the characters were. Overall it is a solid novel, a very straightforward read, and an interesting setting.

Gallant took me by the wrist, whispered to me while I slept, and held me in the dark. I'll carry it with me now always.

Gallant was generally a pretty decent read. The overarching mystery was interesting, if a bit predictable, and the characters were well-written. My biggest issue with this book was that its brevity and fast pace kept me from getting fully immersed, but I don't particularly think it would have benefitted from being longer either.

This is more of a middle grade than a YA story. Be aware of that when starting this book.

This is a short book with some ilusstrations

I loved that the representation of someone who can't speak. But, I didn't enjoy this story that much. I was bored and read this really slow. I was debating to DNF but something kept me going. It was atmospheric, eerie and creepy, but I still should have DNFd this one.

Had a hard time focusing due to pain so may deserve a higher rating lol. Mind kept wandering - the plot ended a little abruptly & was a young narrative, but it was a fun interesting story and I enjoyed the nonverbal protagonist

Not the strongest of V.E. Schwab's books, but still good and enjoyable!

This novel is incredibly atmospheric  and detailed, so much so that it does create a movie in your head. However, because of how detailed visually the book seemed to be written as, I felt as though the character development with the main character, Olivia, fell flat. The pacing took too long in getting her accustomed to Gallant, that by the third act I was already bored, even with her meeting
Death
. Even with the found family trope of the book, it felt cliche and forced. I felt as though the author could have done more with her bonding with her found family, and maybe create a balance in her finding out about her parents and appreciating her found family. I genuinely think that this would make a great movie, but as a novel, it did fall flat.
