Even though I had some isses with certain parts of the story I could have overlooked these if the author hadn't ended the book the way she did. She might as well have slapped me in the face. I shall be giving this book away.

Although heavy on coincidence, well-plotted with good characters.

A bit grim and gruesome, but I continued listening to the audiobook because I was intrigued by the characters. The ending was very disappointing and did not make sense to me.

a decent story suffocated by a lot of extraneous verbiage. i won't be visiting Mo Hayder again.

The ending of this book! It really messed with my head. However, I couldn’t bring myself to give Hanging Hill more than 3 stars.

The storyline was solid enough, it kept me turning the page, but some parts were too unbelievable. Sadly, this isn’t one of Mo Hayder’s best.

I usually find her books to be dark, with great characters and a rollercoaster of a plot. Hanging Hill still has superb characterisation but only has a few twists, with the darkness we are used to throughout appearing right at the end.

Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t a bad mystery, it just isn’t on the same level I have come to expect from Hayder.

My first Mo Hayder novel but definitely not my last. A really intriguing story about the lives of two sisters and loads of other stuff. Some interesting characters and some huge plot twists. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Hayder doesn't hold back. Quite gripping and delivers a chilling ending.

This is my first Mo Hayder novel and I have to say I was disappointed.

First of all, the blurb is slightly misleading, focusing more on the death of Lorne Wood and why her friends are hush-hush about it but the description GR provides is entirely different but better suited to the book. If I'd read the GR description first then I wouldn't have read the book. I suppose that could be a fault on my part and not looking at the descriptions properly but even so, if descriptions and blurbs are different they usually still focus around the same story line.

The ending was actually brilliant, when the reader realises Nial is the murderer and is whisking away the daughter of unsuspecting Sally away to Glastonbury, though I wanted more of the relevant suspense and mystery throughout the novel, as personally I thought the whole business with David Goldrab and co a bit irrelevant and off the mark. I want to know what happened to Millie because the book ends with Sally noticing Nial turning the van in the opposite direction from Glastonbury, yet not saying anything.

I am disappointed because the book was focused on the relationship and hardships the sisters Zoë and Sally had and faced and not really on the murder. There are also unanswered questions such as what "accident" happened when Zoë and Sally were young? And why did Nial murder Lorne and potentially Millie? I was expecting a novel that would have me on the edge of the seat throughout and to be honest most of the time I found myself getting bored.

Overall, it was disappointing and left me feeling dissatisfied. I will be reading another Mo Hayder novel as I have seen her Jack Caffery series seems popular and much better than this stand alone novel.

Like many others that have reviewed, this was my first Hayder novel. I rented the audio book from the local library and have been listening to it during drives and such. The last few nights, however, I haven't been able to stop. I'd start listening at 9PM and before I knew it, it was 2AM and I seriously needed to go to sleep.
As for the plot itself: It started a bit slowly, but picked up and kept going. Several times I had to look at how far I was in the book because I was sure it was going to end any minute. When the end finally did come, however, I was in shock. I finished it only moments ago, so that "end of book numbness" is still fresh. On one hand, I think the ending was surprising and good. Once I get past the initial shock, however, I realize how much the twist left unresolved. It created a lot of questions in the last moment that never got an answer. I suppose that's what makes it a haunting ending. It'd be a lot more boring if everything was wrapped up neatly and delivered to you. It's just something about that empty feeling when you finish and realize, "I'm never going to know exactly what happened."
