I’m actually a bit speechless right now I won’t lie. Like wtf??? I can’t form sentences with any semblance of sophistication, unless it’s this one with all its unnecessary alliteration.

The thing was, I was enjoying it, don’t get me wrong, but the plot twists at the end????? Unforgivably devious and ingenious and oml even when half was revealed I still guessed wrong (it’s midnight and I’m not that smart please forgive me). Everyone drove me insane! Idk how the second book will function now that
Simon’s dead, but I guess that’s what his dad is for (AND TOM OML I KEEP FORGETTING ABOUT HIM).
I enjoyed this so much. It’s crazy.

Idec this gets 5 stars from me. Amazing book + novelty of using my new kindle for the first time. My life has been forever altered!!! Lowkey don’t even care that
Will and Katherine had a budding romance when the woman that raised Will was Katherine’s mum. Slight hidden minor if you squint emotional and roundabout way incest implications

I absolutely ate this up. For years I'd heard that book 1 was confusing and book 2 was when it got really good & worth getting to, so I'm surprised that I absolutely didn't feel that confusion at all. Yes, there are a few more POV characters than I initially expected, but I found that it built gradually-enough, AND gave me reasons right away to be curious about and invested in each of them. (Katherine maybe the least, but by the second meeting when Will was mysteriously there helping her for no reason, oh damn, I KNEW there was something off about it! In a thrilling, mysterious way, not a confusing way.

Anyway, absolutely ate this for breakfast. I'll probably reassess that rating and decide if it's high enough but later. I'm impatient now to start book 2.

It would be five stars but it feels like it takes simply forever for anything to really get going. But otherwise, oh my god. Oh my god. Fuck. Literally immediately got the next one and started it less than five minutes after finishing dark rise. God help me

Even though pacats writing is lacking here and there, if there is one thing she can do, it is enemies to lovers tension

I just loved the unreliable narrative, it had me GASPING

I loved this book; it might be my favorite read of the year. It's such a beautifully written story with many moving parts and characters. The fantasy world is well thought out and described. Diverse character set and in passing queer romances without bigotry/hate language surrounding said romances. Held true to the YA fantasy genre with just brief romantic elements/mentions without it taking the focus from the main plotline. While the twist was predictable, it was so well-written that it didn't matter that there was predictability. A bit of narrator unreliability added depth to the story and was helpful as a reader to learn the magical/fantastical world alongside the MMC. While I would tag content warnings for this book, it was no worse than the big names within the YA genre with war/violent elements (Hunger Games, PJO, Cruel Prince, etc.).

3.5 stars. I was going back and forth between 3 and 4 stars, so 3.5 it is.

The beginning was slow. Slow enough that I wasn't sure I wanted to keep reading. I did, though, which I'm glad for. The book kept me well enough entertained, but I was bored with some parts. I think what boosts my rating of it was the ending. Talk about a twist. Super interesting plot idea, and I'm overall glad I read it.

Solid book, I couldn't put it down. As someone who doesn't normally read fantasy I enjoyed it more than I thought and will probably read the second. Might read again one day
