C.S. Pacat is still brilliant at composing a compelling story, creating an immersive atmosphere, and hinting at the mystery so that you can play along. I wanted these; I got them. Great.

However, two annoying literary issues prevented me from loving Dark Rise. They were annoying because I cannot grasp why they are this way.
• Why are you telling us the same information so many times? So many things are overexplained to the point that the backstories become lame rather than fascinating. Please trust your readers. We got it the first time.
• Dialogues and internal monologues are particularly affected by this exposition disease. It's not a crime to use the aforementioned as storytelling devices, but the sloppy execution often makes interactions feel forced and out of place, taking the reader out of the flow of the book.

I'm only being harsh because I loved the Captive Prince trilogy, read the books many times, and did not notice Pacat writing this way there. So I'm dumbfounded why these issues are here now.

I absolutely ate this up. For years I'd heard that book 1 was confusing and book 2 was when it got really good & worth getting to, so I'm surprised that I absolutely didn't feel that confusion at all. Yes, there are a few more POV characters than I initially expected, but I found that it built gradually-enough, AND gave me reasons right away to be curious about and invested in each of them. (Katherine maybe the least, but by the second meeting when Will was mysteriously there helping her for no reason, oh damn, I KNEW there was something off about it! In a thrilling, mysterious way, not a confusing way.

Anyway, absolutely ate this for breakfast. I'll probably reassess that rating and decide if it's high enough but later. I'm impatient now to start book 2.

It would be five stars but it feels like it takes simply forever for anything to really get going. But otherwise, oh my god. Oh my god. Fuck. Literally immediately got the next one and started it less than five minutes after finishing dark rise. God help me

I loved this book; it might be my favorite read of the year. It's such a beautifully written story with many moving parts and characters. The fantasy world is well thought out and described. Diverse character set and in passing queer romances without bigotry/hate language surrounding said romances. Held true to the YA fantasy genre with just brief romantic elements/mentions without it taking the focus from the main plotline. While the twist was predictable, it was so well-written that it didn't matter that there was predictability. A bit of narrator unreliability added depth to the story and was helpful as a reader to learn the magical/fantastical world alongside the MMC. While I would tag content warnings for this book, it was no worse than the big names within the YA genre with war/violent elements (Hunger Games, PJO, Cruel Prince, etc.).
