Could not get along with the overly dramatised style of writing. Everything felt like a stage drama.

Golden age British mystery with a wide cast of characters (plenty of suspects), including one character who seems to be imported from a different Heyer novel & era. Hiding behind spoiler tags, just in case:
The mystery is fairly well plotted, but not as tight as it could be and far too much of the resolution is disapopintingly off page. But I'm feeling generous and rounding up to 4 stars anyway. There are worse ways to spend an evening.

Randal is just like the other "rakes" Heyer used in her regency novels. They are dark, mysterious, pros at arching their eyebrows, and ever so slightly sinister men...but in the end, their hearts are good and true and they win the lady. And that's exactly what happens here too.The mystery is fairly well plotted, but not as tight as it could be and far too much of the resolution is disapopintingly off page. But I'm feeling generous and rounding up to 4 stars anyway. There are worse ways to spend an evening.

One of my favorite Heyers. A brilliant little mystery with wonderfully dramatized characters. Highly enjoyable murder.
This was written in 1936, the same year as Gone With the Wind, and Randall reminded me a lot of Rhett. Suave, rude, clever men who convince women to marry them on very thin pretext must have been very in just then.
