Only 3 stars?
Well, as the blurb says: this is a sort of half-formed first introduction to the Moomins. I'll get into the series proper next year and see what I think about them then (re-reading after maybe 50 years).
Having said that, the illustrations are superb; and more extensive than in the subsequent books (extra half-star there).

Really great book, loved the characters, the story and the artwork. Especially liked the illustration of Moominpapa about to be rescued, sitting in a tree with a distress flag. Super expressive artworks and really well crafted atmospheres through the different illustrations. Some funny moments as well, liked the idea of the of Moominmamma desperately pleading with the Hattifatteners before realising they can't hear or speak to her.

This is a sweet and very Scandinavian adventure: it is essentially a search for a cozy home. The illustrations are oddly special and the language is lovely.

I love the language of these books, which makes simple things sound fantastical and fantastical things sound everyday. Great humor and imagination.
