My 7 year old says, "it was a good book but not perfect". I thought it was great. It's much shorter than the Moomin books we've read so far, but it's incredibly sweet, and the illustrations were beautiful. The edition we had, by Drawn & Quarterly, could perhaps have printed the illustrations in greyscale, because the sort of maroon-ish colour in the book made it hard to make out what was going on in some cases. But my kids really appreciated having so many pictures to look at.
All in all, a lovely start to the world of Moominvalley. It might not be our favourite Moomin book, but they're always dear to us, and they're always, always moominous.

4.25 Charming, cute and a little thoughtful - a female-driven picaresque that manages to enchant, but also shows that the author still had a little way to polishing her craft. Also quite short compared to the later titles unless I am mistaken.
