If you like other gothic fiction you'll probably like this. I enjoyed it quite a bit, it was a quick read.

I'm not 100% sure what to think about this book. I feel like ultimately it feels hollow. Like none of the characters felt really fleshed out, except for maybe Noemi but even she felt like she could be replaced easily. I agree with one of the comments I saw about the setting being in Mexico and how it didn't feel like a significant part of the story. I understand it was meant to comment on colonialism, but it fell flat for me. I will say the fungi aspect of it thoroughly creeped me out.

I had a really good time reading Mexican Gothic! 😍 For a wimp like me, this was the perfect level of creepy, icky horror without too much gore. The mystery was great, the atmosphere was deliciously dark and decaying, and I loved the main character, Noemi 💖

I thought the eugenics theme added to the uncomfortable atmosphere in the book, but I was also a little disappointed that the majority of characters in this book are British, and most of the book takes place in their British-styled house. They live in Mexico, so yes this does take place in Mexico, but I guess I was hoping for a more Mexican take on horror, rather than just implanting the usual British-horror tropes/aesthetics into a Mexican countryside.

I’d still definitely recommend for people who enjoy horror or are looking for a gentle introduction to the genre! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A super lush and haunting story. A bit slow to start up but filled with everything dark and gruesome and enchanting.
This book engages with conversations on race, mestizaje, gentrification, and gendered roles.

very heavy. wasn’t necessarily scary but it did give me nightmares. the twist was predictable and also not at the same time lol. another example of a white man stealing indigenous knowledge and exploiting indigenous land
