It was creepy and kind of a psychological thriller. At times it was a bit gross. The way the
mushrooms
were involved the plot is unique. The ending was so sweet which made it feel gentle at the end after all the crazy happenings the main character went through.

A super lush and haunting story. A bit slow to start up but filled with everything dark and gruesome and enchanting.
This book engages with conversations on race, mestizaje, gentrification, and gendered roles.

This book was kind of slow in the beginning and I honestly felt like DNF'ing it and finding a more fast-paced book to help me out of my book slump, but I powered through and, man, did it pay off. the last 100-150 pages of this book had me on the edge of my seat. I did not see any of what happened coming and it was such a different concept that had me hooked. However, there were a lot of...elements that were not exactly pleasant so it sometimes felt a little icky and had me grimacing on the bus sometimes. Fire book though and a great way to start the year off.

This was kind of a slow read to me, but it got much better toward the end. I think the plot was very interesting and unique. I liked the gothic vibes, and I have to admit that Francis in this book has to be one of the best and most wholesome characters I've read about in a while.

She wanted to be liked. Perhaps this explained the parties, the crystalline laughter, the well-coiffed hair, the rehearsed smile. She thought that men such as her father could be stern and men could be cold like Virgil, but women needed to be liked or they’d be in trouble. A woman who is not liked is a bitch, and a bitch can hardly do anything: all avenues are closed to her.
