What in the
eugenicist, fascist, white supremacist, colonialist, cousin-loving
scripture did I just experience.

It smells like a
sporehouse
in here. Clearly,
the house embodies the ideas of nurture being stronger than nature in terms of behaviour development and tradition adoption
. Counter to core eugenicist beliefs.

I identified the themes on page 18 and guessed where this would end up not long after with the constant reminders of the
Ouroboros
presence. This didn't detract from the read, it weirdly enhanced it. Like knowing what's going to happen politically doesn't change the horror of it happening.

None of the characters are redeemable, and that feels like the point to me. Noemì is a socialite, far from reality. The Doyle's are of "good and proper breeding". The plot IS the characters, and how they imprint themselves on the world to leave a legacy. Consequently, this close-knit (
you might say incestuous
) cast cannot be deemed diverse, as I again think this is the point. However, it is a rich narrative, with a sense of diverse themes.

4.5 stars. 0.5 taken off for a slow crawl through Act II
and for the positive ending. End in misery. Like global politics.

This was a fun twist on gothic novels with some horror added in. Noemi has to travel to visit her newly married cousin who hasn't kept in touch only to discover a mystery at her new home.

I didn’t know what to expect while reading this story. I enjoyed the story. There were times where the main character would bring up something that felt like it wasn’t the best time.
why are we bringing up your vacation with your family when you might be getting killed soon?
overall this feels like a dark fairy tale story and I enjoyed it.

There were moments where this was a little bit repetitive, and at times it was almost a little bit to gruesome for me, but it was also a fantastic and gripping story and I just generally seem to love most things about Moreno-Garcia's writing.

Technically did not finish this one. I got most of the way through (which was a slog), and I couldn’t make myself finish it. I wanted to try something new with this book and it just wasn’t for me. That’s on me being easily grossed out.

Ultimately, I would have loved to have loved this book, but it became a chore to get through by the end. If I had been more into the story, I may have been able to finish it, but I just could not see the pay-off being worth the time spent on it.
