Good book! Great way to get into spooky season. I’m just getting into gothics and I think this was a fantastic way to start. The most literal definition of the house being a character.

THIS BOOK IS SO CREEPY!! And also glamorous and thrilling and so, so dark. I loved it.

The darkness was almost too much for me, I think some content warnings need to be added to the list, but overall I have no regrets reading it.

I love the main characters, and it was so interesting to find a story where I didn’t immediately fall in love with the villain (I usually can’t help myself but in this case I enjoyed being drawn to the niceness of certain characters).

The storytelling within the plot was so rich, and the prose was gorgeous.

Horror always seems an appropriate genre to critique issues like colonialism, classism, eugenics, etc. Moreno-Garcia writes in evocative prose that really immerses you in the story. The ending did seem anticlimactic to me

I love the idea of this story and the aesthetic of it all, but it felt like such a chore to get through. Every time I thought the plot was going somewhere it slowed down again, to the point where when the plot actually DID pick up I didn't even care anymore and was just trying to finish the book.
