Didn't finish. Got 3/4 of the way, had to take a break and realized I don't care, I feel like I know the rest of the plot already anyway. The characters are one dimensional and flat, almost nothing they do makes any sense (Franny and Niall get married before ever really speaking to each other, what?) and I came to really resent Franny. I get it, she is so wild and free, with such a troubled past, she just can't stay in one place and when her head tells her to go to the library she just has to go for a few days. Yaaawn give me a break. It's also clear the author has not the faintest idea how boats work or even looked much at a map before writing this. They sailed (?) on a fishing vessel (??) without an engine or navigation equipment from Brazil to Ushuaia, Argentina in a week? I get it, it's a novel not a documentary and happy to suspend some disbelief but the book is full of plotholes like that. The captain suddenly gives up his boat, becomes a criminal and gives up his family and everything just to rawdog it with her to the antarctica because that's where the birds are flying and that's just more important okay?? Ridiculous. Also Niall seems abusive and weird and Franny just sounds like an insufferable twat to be around I'm sorry

Really took me aback this one did! Not what i was expecting, in any capacity. Had no idea what this book was even about before starting. First half was kinda of like chill Sally Rooney-esque just vibing character development not too much going on and the BAM the author would just mention a little line in the midst of it all that just made you stop and go wtf ???? And then i was hooked. Ripped the second half in 3 days. Genuinely, a fucking genius book. Brilliantly written. Witty, crafty, compelling, hilarious, sad, depressing, then funny again.

Exceptional. A customer at my bookshop recommended this to me as they were buying a copy for each of their friends, and I'm glad they did. This story serves as a warning of what our future can look like if we don't do everything we can to protect the planet and its beautiful creatures.
