Nothing exceptional but extremely readable and fun. As a first meeting with Horatio Hornblower the reader doesn’t delve deep into his character but is introduced to some of his key traits. Basically a series of short stories each including a memorable adventure.

A very quick read. Each chapter is essentially a complete episodic adventure, which makes for a very easy read. I don't know a lot of the naval terminology, so some details wash over me, but am enjoying the storytelling. It feels a little bit more accessible than the Aubrey/Maturin novels.
I'd be interested in seeing if the other novels are as good, but, like the Jeeves stories, I'm in no rush to read everything.

I quite enjoyed this story and will definitely read the others as time allows. Young Hornblower is pretty tightly wound, but there were a few hints here and there that he also has a little fun now and then.
Wow, loved it. Went quicker than I thought...pure seafaring adventure novel from the POV of a new naval recruit. I think I'll love where these go...
Because I own and love the dvds based on this series, I decided to give the books a shot (knowing that most of the times movies take numerous liberties with novels).
The episodic nature of this first book (chronologically at least) of this series, it makes it a bit harder for the reader to engage with Horatio. Yet, I have to say, reading this book to "get" the thoughts and feelings of our beloved lead character was well worth it.
I plan on reading the whole series, thanks to the library.
