I’m happy I read this American literature classic. I appreciated the version I read as the appendix was really helpful for understanding the time/space this book was written in and why it is so significant. However, I struggled with the slapstick comedic storytelling of Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer. It was fun had interesting for the first 2/3 of the novel, but it got old after a while. Overall, I’m happy I read it but it might be my first and last foray into Mark Twain.

Abstaining from adding a star rating. Huck Finn is an old book and while this is a watered down, condensed, all-bad-words-removed, kids version of the original, some elements remained-murder, racism, and slavery. I mainly read it for context for another read. I will say I like Huck a lot more than Tom. Tom's still a shitty selfish person in this book, no regard for other people's lives. He deserved the bullet in his leg. Too bad he didn't learn his lesson.

I thought some of the character moments were really funny. Like Tom Sawyer is so frustrating but entertaining. Obviously dated, which makes it a bit hard to get through. Lots of language jumpscares. Easy to get stuck and fall out of the vibe to read

I went into this book with low to middling expectations - especially after Tom Sawyer (both books I’m reading in preparation for Everett’s James) - but I was pleasantly surprised at how much fun I did have with parts of this book. Some parts really made me laugh, some parts had me turning the pages fast, and some parts got me a lil’ emotional, but it dragged and got too silly for me towards the end.

(sorry in advance to the fans out there!) I know this is a “classic,” which is why I wanted to read it. I don’t recall ever reading it as a child, as many young people do. I had just finished The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (to which this is a sequel/spinoff) and rather enjoyed that one. I found this story disappointing in comparison, and the seeming glorification of gaslighting throughout became annoying. If I weren’t tracking books, I probably wouldn’t have finished this.
