I’m happy I read this American literature classic. I appreciated the version I read as the appendix was really helpful for understanding the time/space this book was written in and why it is so significant. However, I struggled with the slapstick comedic storytelling of Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer. It was fun had interesting for the first 2/3 of the novel, but it got old after a while. Overall, I’m happy I read it but it might be my first and last foray into Mark Twain.

I thought some of the character moments were really funny. Like Tom Sawyer is so frustrating but entertaining. Obviously dated, which makes it a bit hard to get through. Lots of language jumpscares. Easy to get stuck and fall out of the vibe to read

This made me realize period pieces in “white” voice with black slaves aren’t my thing…the heavy use of the the “n” word I couldn’t take it anymore

I went into this book with low to middling expectations - especially after Tom Sawyer (both books I’m reading in preparation for Everett’s James) - but I was pleasantly surprised at how much fun I did have with parts of this book. Some parts really made me laugh, some parts had me turning the pages fast, and some parts got me a lil’ emotional, but it dragged and got too silly for me towards the end.
