Obsession. Memory. Tension. The narrator tries to reconnect with her mother after having been estranged for most of the last thirty years. With limited information she tries to fill in the gaps of her mother’s present, and with inherently unreliable memories tries to make sense of the past. I love books that deal with memory and its fallibility and this book does a fantastic job exploring that. The sentence structure is nontraditional, using comma after comma after comma where periods might ordinarily have been used. I really liked the smoothing effect it had on my reading. I wasn’t sure I would like or even finish this book but was pleasantly surprised.

Rating this book is really difficult because the author achieved everything they set out to do. The writing and translation are amazing! I just wonder if reading this immediately after ‘Liars’ by Sarah Manguso made me appreciate it less as I found them so similar.
