Unfortunately, it must be said that it seemed to take 80 days to read this book. Perhaps it was all the attention given to outdated means of travel and lengthy locale descriptions that made this moderately sized work seem to drag on. Having always been one to enjoy portrayals of people more than that of nature or machine, I was left wanting for more conversations between characters. Yet, it was not a chore to read, and there were plenty of good lines throughout. For instance, when a minor character nearly misses a departing train, Verne declares that, “Trains, like time and tide, stop for no one” (148). This perfect simile, though not quite poignant, reminds the reader of our daily proximity to the many things we cannot control.
Of those things we cannot control, time is the major theme of the novel, which Jack Sullivan analyzes in the “Afterword.” He draws attention to Phineas Fogg’s almost cold demeanor, present even in times of great stress and danger, thereby emphasizing his machine-like qualities. By pressing calmly on in spite of all that nature and man put in his path, Sullivan reveals that Fogg himself is like a well-wound clock. All in all, I found Sullivan’s analysis to be more enjoyable and more rewarding than the novel itself. So by marking my own time in the push to see Fogg through to the sufficient conclusion, I too was able to achieve a satisfying end.
