Overall a great series and I would recommend it to any fantasy/romantasy lover! Mainly romantasy of course, but that’s beside the point! I have to say—Pestilence and Famine were my personal favorites in this series and I actually gave both of them 5 stars! Famine specifically?! MY MAN, MY MAN, MY MAN!!!!!!! This book is a great runner up and honestly a wonderful end to the series! I think the Four Horseman series says a lot about humanity—of love, sacrifice, pain, suffering, life, and ultimately, death! The spice in these books are pretty close to perfect and just an overall entertaining read in general! I will definitely be keeping this series to pass onto my family and friends for years to come. This series also got me back into reading after god knows how long. Thanks Laura Thalassa, you outdid yourself with this series, truly. <3

Spice rating: 3/5 🌶️

An excellent conclusion to the series. It left nothing wanting and I did cry on the plane.

I guess we have to finish the Horseman Husband rankings:
Death
Pestilence
Famine/War

What are rewarding conclusion to this surprising series! The fourth and final installment, Death, Grapples with The divinity of human love In the face of insurmountable odds.

Typically I tire of stories focused primarily around only two characters. However, the relationship between Thanatos and Laz remained in a constant state of development. their push and pull on each other was never tedious, primarily due to a very endearing FMC.

Where petulances story featured quite a few close calls and scrapes With humanity; Thanatos, like his brother, War, is simply too overpowered to really get slowed down by outside influences. In the case of war, the plot dragged for me, due to that lack of significant challenge (internally and externally). Whereas, Death’s internal conflict over his role as  humanity’s final judgment really did have me wondering where the story would leave us in the end.

I still do wish that there was a bit more exploration of the world through the perspective of the other horsemen throughout this story, rather than just having them show up at key points throughout the story.

But the world building and magic system surrounding the divinity of the Horsemen was developed enough to serve the purpose it needed to. However, utilitarian it did feel at some points.

I’ll probably remember the finer points of the series For a lot longer than I do for most.

My final rankings for the books overall would be:

1. Death - 3.75/5
2. Pestilence - 3.75/5
3. Famine - 3.5/5
5. War - 2/5

I begrudgingly rather liked this one. Death is very cool, Lazarus is... meh.

I would have liked more information about what happened for the rest of their lives, but this book was amazing.

Writing: 3.75⭐️/5
The writing is serviceable. Somehow, Thalassa made this very relatable despite being a novel about the apocalypse. AND YET, I wanted more. I fully believe Thalassa could have made me contemplate so much about humanity with both Death and Lazarus, and yet she almost held back, depending more on tropes and less on the potential for sections of more interesting prose. Overall, still a good read.

Characters: 4⭐️/5
I liked Lazarus. She was much different than Miriam, Sara, and Ana, even if only in her ability to defy death – both literally and figuratively. I liked how her voice came through differently than with the other two. Death, on the other hand, felt fascinating for the first half of the book, and then he fell into a rut where he really just seemed like another carbon-copy Horseman. I feel like there was so much potential with him, and I’m a little disappointed it wasn’t used, even if the outcome was still enjoyable.

Plot: 3.75⭐️/5
I wish I could pull this book in two and rate each half. The first half of this book was so fascinating – and so different from the others. I wanted a bit more from this section, and would have loved to see Thalassa push this section as far as it could go. I liked the two chasing each other, slowly coming to look forward to seeing the other person. And then, when Lazarus meets Death’s brothers, it would have been much more interesting to keep Laz with them for longer, or to tease out this section in a new one. I feel like there was so much potential for more, and I felt a bit disappointed those choices weren’t followed. However, I do appreciate that this plot (at least for the first half) varied from the plots in books one, two, and three of this series.

Who Should Read This Book?
  • Those who liked and loved the first three books (but maybe take a break between so it’s not too fresh)
  • Those who like spicy scenes (there were quite a few of them in this one)
