I read this book partly because I recently watched the Ken Burns’ documentary on Mark Twain, and partly because I wanted to read this and Huckleberry Finn before reading James. I think it was interesting enough. I appreciated the humor that Twain wove into the story. The racism and language was hard to get through. Overall, I’m glad to check it off my list and move on.

As a child my dad used to read Mark Twain's books to me and my siblings. I don't remember having many thoughts about them at the time. I listened to this audiobook in preparation to read Percival Everett's James and found it very charming. I liked how Mark Twain's author's notes were peppered in and the humour they added. I bet so many young boys wanted to be Tom Sawyer.
I understand that Mark Twain was seen as progressive for his time and, while that may be the case, the whole thing with Injun Joe was a bit of a let down...
That being said, I'd definitely read the rest of the series again.
I don't think Jim was really involved in this book so I want to pick up The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn to compare the two.
