I really liked this book. It took me a little while to get into it, but after a few chapters I kept wanting to know more: more about the characters and more about what would happen to them. The plot doesn't whoosh you along like in a modern action story, but its slower motion has a lot of power. I like the little subtleties and chance events that the author captures. The story reminds me a lot of reality. A romantic version of reality, maybe, but still reality.

It was too short for character development. All the characters seemed one-dimensional. The language was hard to read (but that's probably due to the time it was written). I didn't really get a chance to know characters, they just seemed like caricatures of what I image early 1900s life to be like. Lucy is flighty, Cecil is a pompous ass, Freddy is immature, Charlotte seems resentful, and all the characters seem silly. The Emersons, the "crass" people are really the only ones with any positive attributes...which I guess was the whole point of the book...but not my cup of tea.

It seems wrong to give such a low rating to a book that is considered such a classic, but I found it completely underwhelming. I would love to have someone who loves this book change my mind, but I was unimpressed. True, the prose is lovely. I also acknowledge the humor found in the social commentary. All that being said, why is this girl in such a “muddle” over a guy she really knows nothing about? The plot was extremely weak, all the major story beats were so brief that if you blinked you missed it, and none of the characters were likable. At least it was short.
