The King's Equal is a terrific fable for those who love traditionally structured fairy tales, but seek something with a little more gender equality. Although the story does end in a heterosexual marriage, Paterson plays with the prince-searching-for-a-wife story and throws in challenges to gender and class inequality. This would be the perfect book to recommend to young fans of Brave - it has similar themes and some similar magical elements.

This was my favorite book as a kid. I still have my copy I got in 1st grade and sometimes go back and flip through it.
