Read the hardcover. Wow. This one hooks you on page 1 and never lets you go. I simply couldn't put it down. King tells a great story, per usual. One of my favorites from him!

560 pages as only Stephen King can do. I was engaged from the beginning until the very end. The middle dropped off a bit, but by then I was hooked. I had to know how this story ended.
Stephen King has been hit-or-miss with me for a while. This was a hit. Excellent, fluid reading.

Be sure to read Bill Hodges Trilogy first. A little grotesque at times but a good read overall

The first book I've read in a while that I couldn't wait to get back to every time I had to put it down. I also love the character of Holly Gibney (and am looking forward to the new book coming next month). That said, I would have preferred a little less of the supernatural element. I felt the same way about the Bill Hodges books. King writes excellent crime fiction and I'm always a bit disappointed when he veers from a straight crime narrative into the supernatural.

I wish I had known that The Outsider references the Bill Hodges/Mr. Mercedes Trilogy before reading it. It'sn't necessary to have read them first but unless you don't plan to it can spoil them a bit.
While I knew going into this novel that the villain was supernatural (I feel like that was spoilt for most people around the time it became a TV series), the seamless way Stephen King manages to change the story from a dark grizzly crime story to a creepy supernatural thriller is on par with his usual genius.
I enjoyed The Outsider, it was one of King's hits in my book.
I'm still salty I didn't know about the Mercedes connection though.

I would have enjoyed this a lot more if it were about 200 pages shorter. This was my first Stephen King novel and I don’t know if this is just his style, but I felt there was a lot of repetition in this. Characters recounting the same thing multiple times. I liked the story, though. It felt like an X Files episode.
