after seeing numerous ads for the HBO program, i decided it was time to read this novel and see if i took a liking to it. there were times where i would be unable to put this book down, quite literally walking back and forth at work just reading through. yet, there were other times where i felt unable to lift it up, primarily in the first third of the book or so. i enjoyed the plot, but felt like it took too long to set up and that the ending was too rushed. the characters were enjoyable but all rather one sided with a lack of nuance or any significant change, and i closed this novel feeling satisfied but without any major emotional change.

I know that Stephen king tends to write paranormal things, but I think in this case he just shouldn’t have. I loved the idea of the book, even loved maybe the first half of it, but then it started getting supernatural and there was just too much. This would have been a really good story if king had just left the supernatural out and kept the case as a main focus.
And I really feel like he could have gone into the mind of Frank (I think his name was Frank anyways) while he was in his coma. I would have loved to see king’s take on the mind of a coma patient who tried to kill them-self.

This was a fun, gripping, fast-paced read. Seeing the premise I thought it would be scarier, but bar a couple scenes — which were terrifying albeit brief — the novel was more a thriller than horror lit.

Kings' ability for strong characterisation shines here, and I was surprised by how likeable most characters are. It had great writing all throughout, and an emotional ending that caught me unawares.

This might not be the best King novel, but I really, really enjoyed it.

I can't say a whole lot about this because spoilers, but I was hooked almost immediately. I couldn't put this book down. I thought it would take me a week to finish and it took me 4 days. I read quite a few reviews that the ending was weak, and fizzled out. But I liked the ending, it tied it up nicely. Maybe a nicely tied up ending isn't what we've come to expect from King, but I thought it fit in this instance. Obviously the writing and character development was excellent, as to be expected.

Highly recommend.
