The book starts pretty strong, lags a bit in the middle, and definitely picks up towards the end.

The gender stuff is. complicated. Mileage may vary on that front. Personally, I enjoyed this book, and while some of the vast array of interwoven story lines are less engaging or emotionally affecting than others, the central relationship between Oskar and Eli really works.

I got just over 25% of the way through, but I wasn’t feeling the main POV/narrator. I’ll definitely revisit this, but not anytime soon.
