When I started reading this book, I began it under the impression that this was the inspiration for the movie Let Me In (2010). I then realized (after some research online) that [book:Let the Right One In|62107410] is actually the original and [book:Let Me In|7911377] is a rewritten version of this story.

For those of you that might be experiencing some of the same confusion that I was. [book:Let the Right One In|62107410] is a much darker version of the story and does not directly correspond to the movie Let Me In (2010), but instead corresponds to Let the Right One In (2008). I have only read this version and not yet the rewritten one, but from what I learned online, the rewritten story will probably be suited more towards sensitive audiences. Some of the triggers that I picked up on in [book:Let the Right One In|62107410] are:

• Pedophilia
• Blood
• Sexual assault
• Rape
• Violence
• Child abuse/death
• Animal death
• Stalking

*This is not a complete list.* And be aware, that there are very descriptive scenes from the POV of a character that is engaging in pedophilia. If this is something that you can't overlook, I think the other version of this story (from what I learned online) [book:Let Me In|7911377], might be more suited to you.

All of this being said, it was still a very well-written and enjoyable horror/vampire story but please beware of the content to decide which version is best for you.

One of the coolest vampire stories I've ever read, also perhaps the most disturbing thing I've ever read.
One thing I found especially interesting is the characterization of Elie - their gender expression was one of the fun surprises halfway through the book, but more importantly I like that theyre still 12, even though theyre a 200 year old vampire -pretty much all other vampire stories have their child vamps possess the mind of an adult, and it was interesting to see another expression. Also the biology of the vampiric disease was FASCINATING!

Gory, graphic, and gripping. Perfectly juxtaposes the mundanity and sterility of modern, suburban existence with the pervasiveness of horror in every form — from the systemic to the supernatural. The prose is straightforward and incisive, with some really stomach-turning descriptions that linger on the details just enough to get the point across without reveling in it. Even through it all, there’s a hopeful, tender core to the story: that there is someone out there for everyone, no matter how fucked up.

I've been curious about this book for quite a while and finally picked it up. I had seen the movie when I was much younger and remember the atmospheric and tense vibes that really appealed to me. After struggling to get through halfway I watched the film again and realized I much prefer the film, which is a rare phenomenon. But watching it did get me to finish the book to finish the comparison.

There were several arcs that seemed unnecessary and it seems that the filmmakers felt the same. Several characters I was forced to slog through with little to no connection to the plot until the end. And the relationship to Hakan, which
in the film was more mysterious and felt more like a genuine father/daughter or thrall situation turned into an unnecessarily disgusting portrayal of a pedophile who has latched himself onto this child vampire in an attempt to assuage his proclivities by way of justifying it through the lens of 'she's not REALLY a kid so it's okay'. All the while some of the most vile descriptions of sexual attraction and behavior towards children seemed unnecessary and just there to horrify. Which, duh, horror, but for my personal tastes was not a thread I was happy about.

Otherwise, things were neatly tied together with a hint of sweet justice for Oskar's antagonists and a deserved outcome for Hakan.
