Cool concept with a rocky execution. The plot of the story rushes onward without only the barest of character establishment and the assumption that the reader knows everything about this world already. Could have used a lot more story development, especially concerning the magic systems and the geography of things.
It is a really cool concept, though. The author's note was honestly my favorite part and I wish a really good editor had been able to come in and help the author hammer out their vision a bit more before publishing.

I'm not the best person to be reviewing a graphic novel. They are not my favorite genre to read, but after listening to the author discuss his book at the ALAN conference, I wanted to give it another go (this title was one of the many books given to me with my registration). While I enjoyed learning about the cuanderas I struggled with following the story. Most likely my lack of knowledge about the language and culture. I did like the steam punk aspects of the story, though. Even though I'm not a fan of graphic novels, I do recognize the importance of having them available, especially for reluctant readers, and I would not hesitate recommending this to someone that enjoys them.

Beautiful art work! At first the art was distracting in a way that made it hard to read but I quickly got used to it and it’s the price we pay for detailed art so I wouldn’t even call that a flaw.
The world building was complex and interesting, but there’s A LOT conveyed purely through exposition that I didn’t feel like I needed to know, at least not yet.
I like the characters and they’re interesting, though they didn’t seem to change much so far and they aren’t particularly flawed which is, to me, a flaw.
So while it wasn’t a new favorite, I’ll still be recommending it to people who I know would love it and it made me want to draw.

Step into an alternate North America where magic and faith exist equally in a colonial Mexico very different from our own…
The Witch Owl Parliament: (Clockwork Curandera, Volume I) by David Bowles and Raúl the Third is a world where good and evil exists…but recognizing it can be difficult due to the way evil can often hide itself…
The Republic of Santander contains many wonders as we follow a pair of siblings that are willing to risk their souls to protect one another…
This is a world of Christian mages, witch monsters, Yucatan shapeshifters, and alchemy steampunk…
While I imagine this is a lot to throw at kids, the cartoonish yet violent art shouldn’t be too difficult (even the severed limbs).
I liked the colonial Mexico setting and motif of the world…as it’s a very different style of western than we typically get to see in print.
A lot of interesting ideas in here mixing European colonialism with Central American folklore…

Latinx steampunk alternate history Frankenstein with demonic owls! Truly unique and enjoyable start to a series. Love Raul the Third's illustration. Agree with others that it's a little too fast-paced to absorb all the mythology and worldbuilding in just one volume.

I don't fully understand everything that happened, but it's an interesting fantastical world. The black-and-white artwork was nice enough and included very eye-catching red accents, though I couldn't figure out if there was a set pattern to how the red was used. I'm unsure if I'm interested enough to pick up the second book.
