The story has some interesting elements. However, it lacks explanations and not in the way that makes you think. I think this was one of his earliest books, so it's interesting to read if you're interested in Marquez as an author, because you can really see how his style developed.

Most of the time I hadn’t a clue what was going on. May have been that I was too tired and could only read a couple of pages at a time before it sent me to sleep and therefore it taking me so long to read. The blurb here, sounds nothing like the book I just read though! Perhaps I should try again during the day, in one sitting. Perhaps then I’d know who Martín, the Pup, Meme, Adelaida … actually are, and their relationship to one another. And perhaps I’d then care.

"La hojarasca" es un ejercicio narrativo magistral que recuerda vagamente a "Crónica de una muerte anunciada" del mismo autor y al mejor William Faulkner. El autor utiliza tres puntos de vista distintos (el de un niño, su madre y su abuelo) para reconstruir la vida de un médico que se ha suicidado. Parte, por tanto, de la misma premisa narrativa que en "Crónica de una muerte anunciada": reconstruir un suceso a partir de fragmentos no lineales; la gran diferencia es que usa tres narradores y no sólo uno. Las distintas voces se distinguen claramente y parecen tener objetivos muy distintos: el abuelo nos acerca al hombre y sus tribulaciones, la madre se detiene en las relaciones del doctor con la esquiva Meme y el niño aporta la ingenuidad del que no sabe nada al dantesco cuadro. Es muy estimulante apreciar los solapamientos de la historia que se describen en las distintas versiones, las apreciaciones a veces opuestas de los mismos hechos y esos retazos del realismo mágico que va a exudar de todas las narraciones ambientadas en Macondo, que aparece descrita por primera vez en esta obra. Para los que quieran comenzar a sumergirse en García Márquez, esta es la novela.

It may seem like an ordinary story but one that keeps you hooked till the end. I kept guessing about the incidents that happened before and were only given hints about as the story progressed. Gabriel García Márquez surely was a master storyteller.

No me encantó, pero hay algunas partes buenas y su prosa siempre es excelente.

No sé como sentirme acerca de este libro.
Como que dice un montón de cosas pero a la vez no dice nada.
Transmite mucho, muchísimo, pero no dice nada, va a ninguna parte; pero está tan genialmente narrado, creo que podía oler el polvo que había en la casa.
No sé como haré una reseña de esto.
