Lästips royale av the Duchess of Lomma, d.v.s. vår #boblmaf-vän Pondy (Book Pond).

Emotionally draining, but so well-written. Lessing's ability to cover much of Susan's adult life while showing the subtle shifts in her mental state is incredible.

I only read the title story, To Room Nineteen.

"Intelligent marriage" What kind of a nonsensical description is that? It just forces people, in this case, Susan, to be content with what she has. The moment she yearns for more, she's filled with guilt and the cycle continues. She's constrained by a patriarchal society to not be ambitious or have any sense of individuality. She's always supposed to put her children, her marriage, her husband, and her home before her own self.

This is a wonderful piece of literature that makes people think. Happiness cannot exist without some sadness. Accomplishment cannot exist with a certain degree of struggle. And one cannot be content without having some degree of uncertainty.

There are elements of depression, schizophrenia, anxiety, etc in the later parts of this book. It adds to the desperation that Susan is feeling. This book shows you the situation instead of telling you the situation. It's immersive even when you don't fully understand what the protagonist is going through.
