DI Tony McLean investigates a series of murders in Edinburgh, Scotland and confronts an ancient evil. He must find a way to put a stop to it and bring killers to justice.
I found this book as a free download for my Kindle and liked it so much I bought the second in the series. Although there's a paranormal element, it's neatly and subtlety knitted into the plot. The first chapter is very graphic, but the rest of the book is a pretty straight forward police procedural. The characters are likeable, well-rounded and easy to relate to.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book and look forward to more in this series, it's a great read on a dreary, grey day.

"It's too gory".... I believe police work could be quite gory at times, nature of the beast.
"it's too long".... This may have something to do with a metro' detectives ridiculously busy work load.
"I didn't like the dialect."... They're Scottish, they're supposed to be dificult to understand.
Seriously though, I loved the idea, I liked the characters and disagree that they weren't well formed, though a little gallows humour wouldn't have gone amiss (a la Mc Bride) and I believe Oswald to be a fine story teller. My one gripe though were the coincidences, they were just a little too much and too often to ignore.
The sister of his best friend just happened to own the clothes shop, the cufflinks just happened to be made by the one jeweller he goes to , his grandmother was known by every character mentioned in the book, well, I could go on, just like the coincidences really, but it's not necessary because if you read this, and you should if you enjoy Rankin, McBride, Billingham, et al. You'll see.
If only real murders could be solved so conveniently.

Good story ... Could have done without Dagwood ... He doesn't add any value to the story and is frankly just annoying ... And what is up with the constant dead cell references !?!

A fantastic crime novel interwoven with a paranormal element that doesn't take away from the police work but is a key player none the less. A gripping story that has me hooked into the rest of the series. The audio book also has a fantastic narrator.

Really enjoyed this book - fairly easy to work out whodunit but the reasons and the way they linked together was more intriguing.

Best crime thriller I have read in a long time. Really decent clever and unusal plot.

Good characters, well written. Interesting story with just enough creepy stuff to make it that little bit different. Yes, I liked it. Have just downloaded the sequel. Hope it's as good.
