“not everything is what it seems, you know. you’re going to have to figure it out sooner or later. sooner would be better.”

thank you booktok for recommending this unputdownable mindblowing thriller book. the story follows joanne, as she adjusts to her parenthood and navigates unexpected challenges after her husband’s estranged and troubled 20-year-old daughter, chloe, moves into their home.

first of all, i don’t know how many times i’ve felt gaslighted and manipulated the whole time i was reading this book. the plot and writing style is phenomenal. if i did not have work today, i would’ve finished it in just one sitting. it was definitely a page-turner. i hate all the characters in the story and evie is the only one i liked (because she’s a cute baby). if i can just go inside the book and scream at them then i will gladly do so, because they really tested my patience. the whole book is also full of twist after twist after twist. to be honest, as a frequest thriller reader, i somehow predicted the plot twist and i almost scream ‘i was right all along!’ but the story still kept me entertained. one thing i also dislike about it was the open-ending, it seems like i was looking for someone more.

but overall, this book is an amazing collection of mystery and suspense. this is definitely a good story especially to those who are justing starting their psychological thriller era.

The book could have been shortened significantly. I felt like the gaslighting between Chloe and Joann became the entire theme of the novel and continued for HOURS of the book. Approximately 5 hours into the audiobook, I heavily considered DNFing the book, because the gaslighting was just so overdone (and in a childish way, albeit). I didn’t want to listen to it anymore. Thankfully, the last hour and a half of the book picked up and the plot thickened.

The characters were gaslighting ME. The moral of the story is, trust your gut.

This was a wild ride. The first 3/4 was very frustrating to read with all the gaslighting and manipulation, and I could feel for the protagonist, Joanne. But the last quarter was intense and rather unexpected, all the way to the very end. It had me gripping my reading tablet hard. The writing style isn't that special, but I enjoyed the experience nonetheless. I couldn't put the book down.
