I wanted to love this book. It had received so much praise from the literary world that I thought I was in for a sure thing. Although I appreciate that it went off in a direction I wasn't expecting, I was willing this book to be over at the halfway mark. It didn't feel cohesive or engaging at all.

Amazing read, but definitely mind the content warnings on this one. True to the Gothic and horror genres it gets quite dark and graphic. That said, it was unlike anything else I've read, with more of the intrigue that keeps pulling back to Silvia Moreno-Garcia's work.

2/3 of the book was just a scary mystery. The last 1/3 was fucked up in every way

Naomi’s cousin, Catalina, sends a distressed and cryptic letter asking for help. She has fallen ill and feels trapped in her husband’s house. Naomi goes to see if everything’s alright and finds out that there is much more going on with the family and the house than it appears.

This was a very weird and gross book and I kind of liked it. The first half was very slow. It set up the atmosphere of the Doyle house and the history of the Doyles. In the second half things picked up and it was hard to put down. I wouldn’t necessarily say this book was a horror book, but more of a creepy and gross book.

I enjoyed Naomi as a character and watching her kind of unravel the secrets of the Doyle family. However, I wasn’t in love with the book and that’s mainly because this is my preferred genre. I would say I was entertained and a bit shook at what happened at the midway point. Overall, it was a pretty solid read.
