Finally,  I finished this book. After picking it up and putting it back down I finished it. It had nothing to do with the book and more on my mood and fear. This was my first(and probably last) horror book. Some background, I am a huge chicken. I do not like the horror genre in any form(movies, books, television) but I thought, screw it I will give it a try.

This book succeeded in creeping me out and disgusting me. Some of the content in there was just disturbing. However, I still enjoyed the ride. I loved the writing and the creepy house. I don’t think the romance was necessary and I sometimes I did forget that the characters were in Mexico, it felt liked England to me for some reason. Overall, I enjoyed the book and will read more from this author. A great way to end October 🎃

CW: incest, attempted r*pe, child death, cannibalism, racism, misogyny, sexism, forced marriage.

It's difficult to read a book clearly and judge it on its own merits when it's been hyped for so long and your job is Books. Honestly, I think that let me down a bit here as I was primed for la creme de la creme. Additionally, the first Silvia Moreno Garcia book I read (The Daughter of Dr. Moreau) was less than stellar, so I was already worried that Mexican Gothic was overhyped. I don't know that I can speak to that but I will say I did enjoy this book. Unfortunately, the
sexual assault
pulled me out of the story, since that crime's already too horrific for me before adding spec fic flavor. Overall the writing is good, not great - too much tell, not enough show. But I'm still rating this closer to a 4 than a 3 because I could not. stop. reading. Well done, Silvia.

If you like other gothic fiction you'll probably like this. I enjoyed it quite a bit, it was a quick read.

I'm not 100% sure what to think about this book. I feel like ultimately it feels hollow. Like none of the characters felt really fleshed out, except for maybe Noemi but even she felt like she could be replaced easily. I agree with one of the comments I saw about the setting being in Mexico and how it didn't feel like a significant part of the story. I understand it was meant to comment on colonialism, but it fell flat for me. I will say the fungi aspect of it thoroughly creeped me out.

One of the most disturbing books I’ve ever read. Beware reading this at night. I started off expecting more of a Woman in Black or Carmilla vibe and then I got to the second half and I’m still recovering.

The book should be something creepier like Howl of the Gloom. The gloom will follow my thoughts as I sleep tonight - buzzing in the dark and peering with yellow eyes.
