Horror always seems an appropriate genre to critique issues like colonialism, classism, eugenics, etc. Moreno-Garcia writes in evocative prose that really immerses you in the story. The ending did seem anticlimactic to me

An atmospheric Gothic tale with all the classical elements: unlikeable characters, mental and physical illness, dark descriptions, inve tigation a mystery, possible ghosts, etc.
However, the descriptions inflate the prose to the point of immensely slowing the pacing. I would fall asleep listening to the audiobook and wake up, only to find out, that nothing much happened. Saying that, I still liked the way colours were incorporated instead of the classic black and red.

A modern gothic that makes its own incremental mark on the genre, honoring themes of religion (Catholicism, virginism), an isolated home, an entity whose grip tightens, and a striking atmosphere, Moreno-Garcia adds in the element of colonialism with finesse. Mexican Gothic tickled my gothic cravings.
