This book was definitely a slow burn. It was certainly spooky and the imagery was disturbing. The main character, Neomí, was very likeable though most of the characters were despicable. I was rooting for Neomí and her cousin the entire book. I think the horror elements were explained in a very interesting way that actually made a lot of sense. The ending came together really well.

Awesome, creepy tale. Beautiful writing and speaks to so many complex and layered hauntings of humans. Seamlessly weaves in the horrors of eugenics, colonization, misogyny, and much more. I thought the pacing of the book was pretty chill until the last 7 or so chapters… it really picks up and is like WTF?! I loved it.

Dark and disturbing fantasy that grossed me out. Interesting setting, plot and characters but a little slow at times.

I read Silver Nitrate first, and I did not enjoy it as much. I am very glad I gave Silvia Moreno-Garcia a second chance and read this book. It was the slow burn that I love. All of the sudden I was in the throws of it and everything was being uncovered. Silver Nitrate had many more magical elements, that I did not enjoy. If you read any other SMG novels first and are iffy on reading this, do it. I loved the characters, learning about Mexican history and the golden age of Hollywood during the 1950s. It was a joy to read, I just did not particularly like the way it ended. (Too happy for me)

I wanted it to be more about sisters but it's kind of a flat hetero love story w a haunted house. Too many gross rape/SA scenes imo
