Firstly, the mention of Sor Juana took me by surprise and nearly made me cry. So good to see her being talked about even if it’s only two lines. The book was incredibly atmospheric, interesting and clever. It had me gripped and pulling cringed faces all the way through. It’s a clever idea that givens science to haunting and the concept behind it was truly intriguing. Glad I have finally read a SMG book, especially since I have her whole collection! On to the next!

Mexican Gothic is a well written Historical Thriller. Was it anything new? Not necessarily. Was it culturally relevant? I believe so. Did I enjoy it? Absolutely. 10/10 would recommend for fans of historical/thriller novels.

Gothic horror romance, with living wallpaper, gruesome mushrooms, vile men, and dark, horrible atmosphere. The extremely agency-filled young female protagonist made it worth it for me, along with the luminous writing.

The story starts off pretty slow but when it picks up, it really picks up. It reminded me very much of some of Lovecraft's monsters but in a more human, real form which really added to the horror element of the book.
When Naomi find out about the whole mushroom, switching bodies, disgusting uncle fiasco, I was actually shocked. I don't know what I was expecting but it was not this. The imagery of Agnes' corpse covered in mushrooms and everything about Virgil did a wonderful job of enhancing the vibe of the book.
I do have to say that some of the racism and sexism was even more disgusting than the actual horror part, but overall, a very compelling horror stand-alone. I wasn't completely terrified, but the atmosphere of the books was more eerie and mysterious and left me on edge ever before the horror actually began.
