I’m giving this book a solid four stars I’m so happy that Francis lived and got out of the house. While i wish the author would have given us more of a closed ending to the book I could definitely see how the author could easily write a second book based off of this one.

I enjoyed getting wrapped in this dark (moist?) world. The diolgue really helped with the time and place. I could easily imagine the scenes playing out in a black & white film with romantic actors. Definatly one of my fastest reads this year and one I could recommend to most my friends.

I didn’t know what to expect while reading this story. I enjoyed the story. There were times where the main character would bring up something that felt like it wasn’t the best time.
why are we bringing up your vacation with your family when you might be getting killed soon?
overall this feels like a dark fairy tale story and I enjoyed it.

Historical fiction meets horror. So hauntingly beautiful.

if i had a nickel for every time
fungus is the villain
i’d have two nickels which isn’t much but it’s weird that it’s happened twice. anyways the spook was very present in this book and it was excellent. gave me vague mary shelley
but with fungus
and crimson peak
but with fungus
vibes

A super lush and haunting story. A bit slow to start up but filled with everything dark and gruesome and enchanting.
This book engages with conversations on race, mestizaje, gentrification, and gendered roles.

This book was kind of slow in the beginning and I honestly felt like DNF'ing it and finding a more fast-paced book to help me out of my book slump, but I powered through and, man, did it pay off. the last 100-150 pages of this book had me on the edge of my seat. I did not see any of what happened coming and it was such a different concept that had me hooked. However, there were a lot of...elements that were not exactly pleasant so it sometimes felt a little icky and had me grimacing on the bus sometimes. Fire book though and a great way to start the year off.
