Better, I think, than the first two. This was probably helped by getting into the meat of Caesar's story - the conquest of Gaul. I also enjoyed the intrigue in Rome - essentially, a separate storyline in this book, but it was weaved together well.
Author still jumps heads within the same scene with irritating frequency - a pet peeve of mine, maybe, but I can't be the only one.

ah, Gaul. Some famous Ceasaring in here, and some big events in the future of the Roman Empire. It remains compelling, despite obvious historical inaccuracies. We're here for big battles and plot.

I have read the other two books that come before this one in the series and have enjoyed all of them, this one included. It tells the story of Julius Caesar, a person whom I know virtually nothing about so everything I read comes as a surprise. The writing is good and I didn't find the scenes of bloody battle too gory - although I am used to reading such things. I just thought it was an excellent, solid, piece of writing.
His books are just so fantastic. He sucks you into the story every time. I'm looking forward to finishing this series and picking up his other one.
I'm still enjoying the series, but my favorite was still the first. I think it's mainly because the pace suited the story of hus youth better, jumping in and out in a less historical period of his life. Doing the same in a more detailed period results in it feeling a little rushed at times.
I'm not complaining that it's historical fiction, weaving a story from selected threads from history without trying to be the work of a historian, and there were more significant milestones in this one that were correct, along with other parts he adjusts for the sake of his story. And that's ok to me.
I still far prefer Colleen McCullough's epic series, partially because in its length it let's her go much deeper. But others might not enjoy that length. I prefer her versions major characters too, especially Julius.
