Jemisin does it again! As a New Yorker, this pleased me greatly, but even objectively this is an enjoyable as hell read. Everything you love about Jemisin’s work is here: genuinely innovative fantasy, an extremely lovable and interesting ensemble cast, fantastic worldbuilding, pump-your-first-in-the-air awesome moments, and more! I’m eager for the next installments in this series!

The City We Became is magical realism at its finest. One day, New York City is born. Born as a living City, with a living avatar and 5 sub-avatars. But as it's being born, something straight out of Lovecraft attacks it, trying to kill it. The avatar fights it off, and collapses, just as the sub-avatars awaken. And it gets better and more confusing from there.

The City We Became doesn't have the exposition or information dump that a lot of magical realism books have. The reader learns what is happening as the characters learn. I'm very interested to see where she goes with the trilogy, given what happens during the climatic scenes.

There are aspects of this I really love but overall I feel like it tries to do too much- worth a read if you love NYC, though. Loses some points from me for sound effects and music in the audiobook- but if you’re in to that I suppose it’s well done.

One part 'Everyone in New York hates each other! And traffic!'
Two parts 'New York is just the best!'
And one part 'Are you sure you noticed the racism? Let me repeat it again over an extra 10 pages just to be sure. And then apply every racial stereotype to the other characters so you're aware they're not white.'

With a couple of ageist and fatphobic comments to round it all out.

Also the twist at the end? Absolutely predictable.
Seriously we're introduced to Veneza with about a million references to the fact she lives in Jersey which 'isn't part of New York reeeeeally, but kinda is at heart' and then she just happens to be the only non-city who hangs around?

The avatars of New York and its boroughs find themselves awakened all at once. Yesterday, they weren't New York, just New Yorkers, and today they're facing an uncertain future, racism, gentrification, and an interdimensional being that wants them dead, all while figuring out how to be a city filled with millions of people. I absolutely loved this book, and it quickly slid onto my favorites list.
