I found this play to be the most entertaining of all Shx’s plays I’ve read thus far. I enjoyed the POV switch from Venice to Belmont and the characters in each setting. The transitions between these two settings reminds me of Game of Thrones, in which we follow the lives of multiple people in different locations within their world. The plot was executed well, and it resembles a “fairytale” plot line.
The anti-semitism was crazzyyy tho, so it will never be getting the 5 stars from me

Are not with me esteemed above thy life.
I would lose all, ay, sacrifice them all
Here to this devil, to deliver you.'

Had a tough time rating Shakespeare's "The Merchant of Venice." I actually found it to be one of Shakespeare's stronger stories and his frequently used disguise device works well and cleverly here. Portia is a pretty strong and clever female character, which I enjoyed all the more for its rarity amongst Shakespeare's works.
The play was difficult to read, however, because of the anti-Semitic aspects that really permeate the text.

Lot of anti Semitism and of course a black joke or two, but I guess that was a sign of the times. Still a good plot.

Fun to analyze nowadays, but rather short and does not fit comfortably into the comedy genre. Several elements of the play are fantastical, such as the three caskets, but the main plot revolves around loans and business. It's not as cohesive as I'd like. 2.5/5
