Homophobia, racism, sexism. Like what's the point of all of that in the anti-capitialist killer shark story? Waste of time. Spielberg did all the heavy lifting to make Jaws what it is today.

Wow. I thought I would love this book because Jaws is one of my favorite movies - definitely not the case. One of the few instances where the movie was better. One star for the shark parts, and .25 for the conservation efforts Benchley did after the damage this book did to sharks.

I hesitate to call this book a thriller. I was disappointed by the characters and plot line. The focus for the first part of the book seemed to be on Brody’s wife’s unhappiness with her life rather than the shark that was killing people in town. The ending was disappointing to say the least and had no punch. Even the hunt and subsequent fight with the shark did not have high enough stakes, which could have been fixed with better writing. Just watch the movie.

I’m a huge fan of classic sci-fi, so I’m fairly used to sexism of misogyny and can typically move past it. But this author has a police detective complaining about how small a dead woman’s breasts were. He finds a person who’s been maimed and killed by a shark, and his literal first thought is how small and flat her breasts are. Absolutely not. Immediate dnf. Oh, and the detective had been reading a book that had gratuitous mentions of rape for literally no reason.

The book is weirder about women then It is about sharks which is saying something. It is weird about race but not in a way that’s coherent on way or the other that I could really go into it but if you have sensitivity to slurs there’s slurs about Japanese people and lesbians in the latter chapters.

The book tries to have some conversation about toxic masculinity and the performance of it that the book is too sexist to have a coherent message about. For a book that comes across as respecting the main protagonist for being a cop it does have conservations about corruption and classism in tourist small towns including in politics, media and police.

It’s an interesting experience because a book you go in assuming is man vs nature type of book it is more man vs man.

I literally only finished this book so I could rate it because I hated it so much. The only interesting/good parts were the parts about the shark, everything else was a nightmarish mixture of racism, misogyny, homophobia, and weird rape fantasies. And also some copaganda and animal torture/cruelty for fun, I guess.
