This and Book 4 are the best in the series. Shan is really good at writing stuff that has to do with rugged survivalism and finding food and shelter and in general just roughing it. This does delve more into the fantastical, though--weird creatures and monsters and dragons are in this one, before we head back into the realm of only the regular world plus vampires.

Darren's loyalty is tested when Harkat faces his face. They journey together in hopes of figuring out who he was before he died. We need a strange few people on the way, and old wounds are reopened. I enjoyed this one; it's part of the plot I've been waiting for and it was certainly worth the wait! You'll never expect the reveal, but you'll want to continue on to the next book!
Also, note: my 12 year old brother loves this series; he read all 12 books in less than a week!

What a story! The quest-like aspect was a nice change of pace from the ongoing series!
I really was captivated by all the different trials Darren and Harkat faced until the very end and what an ending it was! I really did not see it coming. Though I'm still befuddled about the 'how' of it, the 'why' was sheer brilliance.
It's probably one of the best stories in the series so far.

Lake of Souls is the first of Darren's books since the third that feels like a standalone volume, taking a break from the war to fling Darren and Harkat into a high fantasy setting. Focusing on the bond between the two makes for one of the better volumes and provides a different kind of adventure for characters we know very well.

3.5 for the manga version
This is an interesting volume, I've not reread the series in sooooo many years so a lot of it I couldn't remember (like I vividly remember what the Grotesque looked like, but nothing about what it actually does in the storyline)
I do want to just reiterate again - as I have on each volume - that this shouldn't be your first foray into the Saga of Darren Shan. You should 100% read the books first, as the manga can't fully give you the experience the books do. Battle scenes for example are harder to express in a few pictures compared to full paragraphs, and returning characters aren't necessarily easy to recognise because of the style of drawing.
