What can I say? It’s a detective novel.

Brilliant

Everything I like in a book - gripping, unpredictable, with the right dash of humour. Re-reading after finishing the series a wee while ago and I just cant get enough!

First in a series of detective novels set in a small seaside Scottish town. It set up the characters well for the rest of the series which I would read. Some humour in the story although the murders were very gruesome. Slight criticism would be that the roles were a bit stereotypically sexist. Hope this improves as the series goes on.

Good story, interesting characters though the ending… the final motive was a bit overdone for me but I feel like the author could have made it much more interesting and, well, original, if he had fleshed the vilain out more. Still, a very good debut of a new series!

Needed to quench my crime fiction thirst & borrowed a set of Meyrick books from a friend. This first one hit the spot after initial uncertainty about some speech written in Scottish dialect. It actually gave a real flavour to the book & I could heard the Scotch speech in my head!
Some elements of the story were predictable (Daley’s wife turning up, being involved with a key character etc), but this didn’t diminish the suspense.
Clear, strong characterization and stories intertwined made this an enjoyable read. Looking forward to reading the next one.

Kindle had a sale on this series by Denzil Meyrick, so I decided to purchase the first three books in the DCI Daley.

We follow D.C.I. Jim Daley has to travel from Glasgow to investigate after a young woman's body washes up in a small town, west of Scotland. Jim Daley is a broken man with marital troubles, a career that has been stalled due to personal problems and now sent to this little town. However, more and more bodies appear, and he needs to untangle the secrecy that usually lies in a small town.

Jim Daley is a flawed character which I liked. He is not this super cop, with a perfect body and a brilliant mind. Instead, he is a regular middle-aged dude, trying to deal with his problems and investigate a series of horrible crimes. Some of the Scottish slang was confusing, but nothing googling couldn't help with.

There are some trigger warnings; I would recommend just checking before you read. There are aspects of violence and brutality against usual women or children with all crime books.

****TRIGGERS- S/A****
I loved the way this was written, fast paced and great storyline. Very Scottish too which I also loved. I would say it’s very detailed and on some of the chapters readers might find it triggering due to the amount of detail the author has went into. A captivating read? Yes of course, I would say! I couldn’t put it down! 3/5
