The Rat King versus the Pied Piper in mondern-day London. Sort of. Anyway, it is *good*. Miéville was recommended to me by my friend Amy. Thanks Amy!
King Rat hooked me hard in the beginning. I loved the whole idea, the DnB love, the dirty grimey London, King Rat's cockney speech. It just couldn't keep up the magic to make me want to continue reading more than just to finish. I will be looking for more of China's stuff though.
This is a 2.5 for Mieville. Which is like me rating my favourite sweets 2.5/5. To continue to analysis its like, ive bought a bag of starbursts and its all orange and lime. Im still happy, its starbursts for god sakes, but its the worst of the bunch yanno?

King Rat is China Miéville's first novel, and it's simpler than any of his books I've read so far. Simpler, different, but not poorer in any way. You can see everything here: his master storytelling skills, his unique way of guiding a story forth, his ideologies and beliefs stripped bare before the reader. I believe I would have liked this book more if it were my first Miéville, but yes, I liked it nonetheless. I just wish I had seen more of King Rat's world. I want to meet Queen Bitch and the Lord of the Flies, I wanna know if the spiders found a new ruler. I like it when stories leave me like this: wanting more.

This book was everything I wanted it to be and more.
After reading Kraken, I was so excited to read more China. Although I still look forward to reading them, Perdido Street Station and The City & The City were just not scratching the itch I needed. I missed my Goss, and I definitely got him with this one.
This was China’s first published novel, and it does show. However, even in that context this book is still such a treat to read. The characters were genuine, the adventure and world was fun to roll around in, and the plot was like a super fun rollercoaster climax.
I definitely dusted off some old drum and bass favourites (mainly Limewax) during the second half, and highly recommend you do the same if you’re into that kind of thing.
