Sometimes there is nothing as satisfying as watching events come the full circle and as the concluding book of the Ketty Jay series, Ace of Skulls is a deeply satisfying book where events of the past dig in their clawed paws on the motley crew of Ketty Jay and even more so, their captain.
From a bunch of no-hopers and mercenaries to a full team and crew, this was a great journey and events in the book test them to the limit. All characters get a terrific character arc barring Jez (which was a lil disappointing but her fate seemed inevitable and poetic). While the focus to a great extent is on Frey and his quest, there are immense moments for Harkins, the shuddering wreck of a human being and Pinn, the unimaginative oaf, both thought top class pilots. The ending is spectacular as things come to head. There is a funeral and a potential birth, proving the Chris Wooding does the perfect fan service possible (Hint: its not what you think but its what you will love)
Or as one character puts it "Not bad for a bunch of reprobates with a galaxy of personality disorders"
Guardians of Galaxy 2 could definitely draw a lot of storylines from this series
All together incredibly satisfying end to an action packed, crazy romp of an adventure
Highly recommended

3.5 and we'll round up. This book got the series' groove back a little bit. There were lots of friendship payoffs, people dropping in to save each other, and characters finding their stride. The ending stumbled a bit by going a little dark with every character monologuing about not really caring about the people they killed, while also trying to have a happy ending. Even the happy ending seemed a little unearned? But I'll forgive the sloppy ending for the genuine enjoyment of the rest of the book.
This was the best of the four in the series. Lots of action and deception and love prevailed. Even the ship's cat found a mate.
The make believe science behind capture of demons was almost believable. Innovative writing. Fun stuff!

I don't want to say goodbye to this series. Definitely one of the most fun literary adventures I have in years. It has some flaws, but the series got heart.
What a perfect ending to an exciting, original, and plain ol' badass series.
The final adventure of the crew of the Ketty Jay pulls no punches. Everything, and I mean goddamned EVERYTHING, comes to head. The plot from all three preceding stories gets pulled into the tapestry of these characters. Shit hits the fan, in a climactic scene that seemed to take a third of the book, and left me feeling physically exhausted once I reached the end. (That's physically exhausted in a good way, like after a marathon night with the lover of your dreams. Or, like, running after and then finally catching the ice-cream truck.)
I couldn't have asked for a better finale in what has become, almost unnoticed, one of the best series I've ever read. Pirates and war and lost loves and outer-space espionage and daemonic possession and giant metal monsters and a really, really tough old tomcat.
Just....just read them. All of them.

The 4th and final book in this Firefly meets steampunk series. very enjoyable and I think this would make a great tv show. Pulpy in all the good ways (and some of the bad ways as well). Perfect popcorn read.
I'm pretty glad this series is finally finished. I found myself nodding off while reading this and flying through it just to finish. Also, I was forced to buy this installment due to my stupid library having every book in the series but the last one. On ebook and physical! But I did sort of enjoy seeing these characters one last time.
